Konstanz

Konstanz am Bodensee or Constance is a city situated in the south-western region from Germany, at the borders with Switzerland(Canton Thurgau). Regarding to the lake Constance(Bodensee) the biggest city in the region is located at the western end side. Where the Rhine outflow leaves the upper lake(Obersee).

We visited Constance city in june 2012, the weather was not so friendly but this didn't stop us to discovery the beauties of this city.

In order to see better the surroundings of the Constance city you can choose a short trip with the boat, a trip that will give you the chance to have an amazing overview on the city.

Afterwards, we suggest you to take a long walk across the city and enjoy the parfume of the old houses and streets.

The port entrance with the "Imperia" statue which welcomes the new arrived ships in the harbour. The "Imperia" statue was made by artist Peter Lenk and revealed in 1993. At that time the statue raised a lot of discussion and criticism, nowadays it became one of the city's symbol. The statue measures 9 meters, weight almost 18 tones and rotates around its axis. The two persons held on the palms are the Pope Martin V and the King Sigismund.

It symbolize the power of seducing (Imperia is interpreted as the lady of pleasure) over the cardinals and princes at the Council of Constance in that times. The construction theme of this statue comes from Balzac's story "La belle Imperia".

Cathedral "Unserer Lieben Frau zu Konstanz"

One of the many attraction from Constance city is the SEALife Konstanz, the biggest aquarium in the region. Even if you are an adult, you can experience here different and even rare creatures. From Gentoo Penguins, Rays, Starfish, Seehorses, Jellyfishes, until Sharks and Surgeonfish. Each creature has his own story and is waiting for you to discover it.

The most famous building from the entire city: Konzilgebäude. The history says that in 1417, in this building, after 3 long conclave days the Martin V. was elected as the future pope. The enclave was registered as unique in the region of North of the Alps.

Rheintorturm, a section from the former citywall and the bridge over the Rhein Lake. The Rhein Lake is in fact a four km river located in the Constance lake.  

It is considered a part of the Rhine river, which flows into Lake Constance as the Alpine Rhine and flows out of the Lake as the High Rhine(Source: Wikipedia).

The benches are a pleasant way to relax and gives you a really good perspective on the lake.

If you plan to visit Constance in the summer time, you will remark flying Zeppelins on the sky. Organised tours with the Zeppelin are possible and held relative often.  For those who are interested to try this kind of air transportation you can find more information in Friedrichshafen.
