Zaanse Schans

Positioned 50 km away from Kaukenhof and 20 km from Amsterdam – in Zaanse Schans you'll find another amazing air museum which really deserves your attention – the Zaans museum.
If you are planning to visit Amsterdam or Kaukenhof Park, then you should really take into account this masterpiece of industrial engineering located in the Zaan region.

The Zaanstreek (Zaan region – in direct English translation) it’s the Europas oldest industrial area, situated on the both sides of the Zaan river. In those days as it is nowadays, the river was one of the key factor for a quick industrial development and economic growth. In this way there was the possibility to gain energy from completely two different sources: water and wind.

In fact the Zaans museum it is a quite impressive collection of windmills and houses which were built after year 1574. The approx. 35 houses and windmills were collected from the whole region of Zaanstreek and afterwards restored and installed along the right side of the Zaan river.
Here you can enjoy seeing wooden windmills, barns, and houses, architected in the old good Dutch style.
Do not miss the extraordinary craft shows for making clogs and chees. The craftsmen are indeed "cool" persons and they will know exactly how to entertain you and to explain how the clogs and cheese are being manufactured.

The newest windmill in the region is The Young Sheep. This masterpiece was constructed using the original plans while following the same technics as in the past(with some minor exceptions). The windmill is fully functional and for a 3 euro entry fee it's possible to visit it and experience a small piece of Holland’s history and tradition.

For those who are planning to come by car to Zaanse Schans and want to avoid the high parking price (8 euro), please take into consideration to park the car on the side streets of the village.
The village is situated on the other side of the river and from there you just have to make a very short walk to the museum.
No fee is needed for the museum entrance.
