Another important cultural heritage site in the Lake Constance region is Castle Salem situated in Salem city.
Castle Salem can be reached very easily by car. If you choose to come from Friedrichshafen there are just 20 km to drive, if you are comming from Constance, 18 km with the ferry or 55 km if you choose to skip the ferry.
The Monastery and Palace Salem is in fact the former Cistercian abbey which was founded in 1134. After approximative 700 years(1802 to be more exact) the whole property was annexed by German state and served as a residence for the margraves' families of Baden.
In these days the castle became another significant cultural monument in Baden-Württemberg and a very good attraction point to the visitors.
Beyound the excellent wine tradition and culture of Salem you can find here:
- The High Gothic Cathedral
- The world-famous boarding school which was founded by Prince Max of Baden(the 8th Chancellor of German Empire) and Kurt Hahn
- A huge castle park which extends over a 17 hectare surface
- Astonishing 700 years of art and arhitecture
- A fire brigade museum
- A distillery and a cooperage museum
- Historical smiths, stables and prelature cellar
On the date we had visited Salem Castle there were no more guided tours. We didn't had the opportunity to see the solemn combination of the Gothic and Baroque arhitecture. We just took the chance to explore the surroundings of the castle. For those who want to visit this amazing castle you should know that the castle is open from 24th of March until 1st of November.
Please enjoy a short virtual tour through more than 700 years of history.
Hofgarten - is the garden which welcomes you right from the begining. The arrangement of the splendid garden is done of course also in the retro Barock style. The creative elements that completes the garden are water basins, fountains and wells, symmetrical alleys and impeccably tailored hedges and bushes and the last but not the least two labyrinths.
Royal stables founded in 1734
The High Gothic Cathedral datet from year 1300 and very well known for the Alabaster Jeweleries
